Morden just called me. The family of one of our kids came in this morning. Funeral arrangements.
The mom thought it was gang related. I mean, on the South Side, it's not a huge logical leap to make. Sucks, but it's true. I had to be the one to tell his mom he was augmented. His brother was fucking pissed- Mikey never wanted her to know he was a freak, how could I?! Seriously? He'd rather his mom think his brother was a damn King than tell her he could play with electricity? I mean I get her being upset. I met the kid a couple times, tops, and I knew something about her son she didn't. But... with the way she reacted after that, and the shit she called me. I can't say I blame him.
How are we, as a society, still getting away with this shit? When my parents found out about me, I was in the fucking hospital, before everybody really knew what was going on. The worst I got from my dad was a joke about laying fucking eggs. And trust me, he's not exactly Ward Beaver. This lady's talking about disowning her own son just for knowing her other son was augmented, and not telling her? Mother of the fucking year. No wonder the kid spent so much time around the club.
In a weird stroke of fate, Morden won the rec grant from the City. They ended up deciding the place was going to be a kind of half-way house/camp for kid that didn't feel safe at home*. The original proposal was to support LGBTQ teenagers in higher-risk neighborhoods. He's already talking about petitioning to reword it to include augmented teens who can't stay at home. I don't know how many would really take him up on it, with everything going on. But I told him I'd help out how I can. Our Augmented kids have already kind of elected me their unofficial Peter Pan, anyway. It's probably the feathers.
